May 24, 2007

Two rare Winnie the Pooh illustrations recently went under the hammer. £21,600 (over $40,000) was paid by a wealthy individual to purchase Tiggers Don't Like Honey, a picture drawn by the now famous illustrator Ernest H Shepard. A second picture, entitled Pooh visiting in Owl’s parlour, was also available during the auction. Despite the high price tag, the pictures sold for under estimated value of £30,000.

Rare Illustration from Pooh books goes under the hammer.
Tiggers Don't Like Honey is drawn in coloured crayon and was due to be featured in the 1958 print of The World of Pooh. However, it was not included in the final printed version. The second illustration failed to sell.

Sketches by EH Shepard were also sold. Other illustrations from children's stories were also available, including scenes from Cat in the Hat and Captain Pugwash in The Wind in the Willows.

The auction took place at Bonhams in Knightsbridge, London on May 22nd. The drawings were sold by a private collector.
