October 13th, 2008 is the birthday of Paddington Bear and this year he turned 50. It all started on this day fifty years ago when author Michael Bond saw a lone teddy bear lying on the shelf of a toy store at Paddington Station London. The day happened to be Christmas Eve and Mr. Bond bought the bear and presented it to his wife. Some 10 year after he bought the bear he found the inspiration to write the first Paddington Bear story.

It was on October 13th, 1958 that the first book called 'A Bear Called Paddington' was published and thereafter his books have been translated into thirty different languages and sold the world over. There has also been a television series, as well as film adaptations of Paddington Bear. Paddington Bear is a native of Peru and his aunt Lucy packed him of to London with a note saying "Please look after this bear". His favorite food is marmalade and his manners are impeccable.

Paddington Bear is fifty years old, but the world's most adorable bear still remains to be Winnie the Pooh who is eighty-two years old now. Winnie the Pooh's birthday falls on August 21, 1926.
