May 2, 2009

For all you crazy Pooh fans who would like to have everything Pooh available in the market there is some great news for you. There is a new Pooh toy available in the market and is the must-have item for the elementary school set.

Peek-a-Pooh is a tiny rubber Winnie-the-Pooh character attached to a small string. The product is the latest Pooh offering from Walt Disney and it has children very excited. The price is just $1 and can be bought from a vending machine.

But there is news that just a week after the new Peek-a-Pooh toy became a fad schools had called upon teachers to not allow children to bring such toys to school which is in keeping with school policies to not allow toys-at-school.

Winnie-the-Pooh myths dispelled

April 10, 2009

It's a known fact that the original name for Pooh Bear was Winnie-the-Pooh but when Disney acquired the rights the hyphens were removed. Thus it stands as Winnie the Pooh and that's how all young children would know it. But there's more to the story here are some defining moments.

  • Winnie short for "Winnipeg" was a bear bought by a Canadian lieutenant during World War I and later on became the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade's mascot in Europe. Post war she retired and came to the London zoo where she was befriended by A.A. Milne and his son.
  • Pooh was actually a swan that Christopher Robin Milne met when he was on a vacation with his father. When he received a soft toy bear on his birthday he named it Winnie-the-Pooh.
  • Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga and Roo too were stuff toy animals of Christopher Robin. Whereas Rabbit and Owl are believed to be animals from Christopher Robin local surroundings. Gopher was not part of the original stories and has been added by Disney.
  • The Hundred Acre Woods does not exist rather there is a Five Hundred Acre Woods on the outskirts of Ashdown Forest, Milne's home in Sussex, England.
  • Even though A.A. Milne was a prolific novelist & playwright he received only moderate success but that meant kids got wonderful kids stories and poems from him.
  • A few years ago Disney acknowledged that Winnie the Pooh was second only to Mickey Mouse in popularity around the world.
  • Pooh and friends have 10 full-length films to their credit. They also have starred in 4 TV shows plus 4 holiday specials & 12 video games. This includes Winnie the Pooh Dance Dance Revolution.

The good thing on the part of Disney is that they have captured and presented the most wonderful elements of Winnie the Pooh and other Pooh characters. But at the same time everyone should read the original books because there is no better way to read and learn about the Pooh character than through the stories and poems written by Alexander Alan Milne.

March 29, 2009

Pooh Sticks is undoubtedly the favorite game that Winnie the Pooh played and he played this game with his closest friend Christopher Robin mostly when they had nothing else to do in the day.

As it is every year people gather from all around the world to celebrate this as a means to show their love and affection for the world's most adorable bear. The game is a frictional game that finds a mention in author A.A. Milne's classic children's book The House At Pooh Corner.

This year too nearly 2,000 people gathered at the World Pooh Sticks Championships held in Little Wittenham, near Dorchester-on-Thames to play this wonderful fun game. The game is essentially easy to play with participants required to through sticks into the river from a bridge to see who's emerged first.

The event managed to raise nearly £1,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Rotary clubs and some money will go to restoring a local church's roof. Entry costs £2 per person, £6 for a family and £0 for a team.

Rare Winnie the Pooh book discovered

February 18, 2009

Winnie the Pooh has always been a source of great happiness to everyone around the world and at times he also brings riches to people. That's what happened with an unknown couple when they were able to sell 4 copies of Winnie the Pooh books each signed by the real Christopher Robin.

The couple took the 4 copies of Winnie the Pooh books to a valuation day and was shockingly surprised to hear that each one of those books could fetch up to £4,000 at auction. The husband happened to be a school friend of Christopher Robin and had treasured those books ever since he got Christopher Robin Milne to sign the books.

Even after hearing the price that the books could fetch them the couple decided that they would not sell for any money. They said the books Winnie The Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner, Now We Are Six and When We Were Very Young would be passed on by them to their next generations.

Book expert Lorraine Spindler from Boffin Books in Walton-on-the-Hill was there when the books were brought and said: "It is unusual to be shown one first edition Winnie The Pooh book in good condition but to be shown all four was very exciting - quite surreal. It was quite early in the day and I thought I was dreaming."
